You can never be too busy for good music! Join Lucas Smith and take a listen to his latest single, “I Can’t Bear to Stay.”
A musician, instructor, and performer based in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, Lucas Smith is deeply rooted in the DIY music scene. Lucas has been in the music scene since the early 2000’s. He has played venues from dive bars and house shows, to big-name venues and festivals.
Lucas Smith’s music often touches on tough situations, but he hopes listeners can find peace in relating to his songs. “From surviving an abusive childhood and everything that comes with that, to dealing with substance abuse issues, music has helped me make sense of some wild stuff that life has thrown my way,” he says. “I just want to put it out there honestly.”

In his latest release, Lucas discusses the feeling of being trapped in a toxic relationship. The conflict of the speaker telling the listener that “You’re all that I want / But you’re not what I need” showcases the depth of conflict one can go through when they care about someone else, but can’t remain in a relationship with them for their own sake. Lucas takes a hard discussion topic and makes it beautiful with this track, an impressive feat in itself.
The song begins with a twangy guitar line that leads into emotional vocals, immediately showcasing Lucas’ talent at infusing feeling into every word. The lyrics themselves tell a detailed story: “And I can’t bear to stay / But I sure don’t wanna leave / There’s an ever-growing distance / And your kiss feels like a chore / And it sure seems worth discussing / But we don’t do that anymore.”
Besides the story within the lyrics, Lucas Smith’s voice and instrumentals take on a life of their own with an infusion of feeling into the track. Mournful and yet hopeful as he discusses his conflicting emotions, Lucas creates a three-dimensional world within the spaces and pauses between rhythms up until the very last fading note.
In the coming months, Lucas plans to release an EP and begin touring when it is safe to do so.
