The music industry is a hard place to be a woman, but the female artists of today are continuing to forge a path for our gender in this world. Among them is Brianna Musco, a former college soccer star and classical guitar player at Delaware State University. She is currently on tour to promote her upcoming debut EP, “Forever,” with her full backing band composed of Lucas Jones (guitars), Kory Hilpmann (keys), Nicholas Cela (drums), and Chris Basile (bass).
Below, Brianna discusses her challenges with her career so far and gives a sneak peek at one of the tracks of her upcoming release!
Alexa: How would you describe your music in three words?
Brianna: I would describe my music as confident, emotional, and relatable.
A: What is the biggest challenge you have faced in life and/or in music?
B: The biggest challenge I have faced so far is being taken seriously as a younger female artist.
A: What makes it all worth it to you?
B: It makes it all worth it when I am performing with the boys and I look out into the crowd and I see people… having a great time. I love helping people forget about their problems during the week and [helping] them live in the moment.
A: What are your large-scale goals?
B: We are currently working on our debut EP, “Forever,” and I am hoping to have a great reaction [to] its upcoming release.
A: Who inspires you?
B: Musically, Stevie Nicks, Taylor Swift, John Mayer—the list goes on forever. My Family is the most important thing to me in life and they have supported me whether it was with sports or music. They’ve inspired me to create even better music with this upcoming EP.
A: Tell me the story behind an original song that means a lot to you.
B: The song, “Heaven,” will be on the EP and is sort of an apology to my grandmother who unfortunately passed away when I was in high school. It begins with, “I wish you never got sick/And maybe walked a little more/I wish I wasn’t so angry all the time/I wish I helped you when you asked and maybe stopped talking back/’Cause you were so lonely down there.”
A: What does your bucket list include?
B: My bucket list includes paying off my student loans (A: Relatable!) and being able to travel and play music for a living.
A: What makes you stand out as an artist?
B: There are millions of amazing female singers. I like to think my niche is that I studied classical guitar in college. With that I am a bit more confident in taking solos or playing guitar by myself for a song or two.
A: What advice do you have for other women who want to break into the music industry?
B: Don’t let anyone, especially a man or even a fellow female artist, try to tell you that you can’t do something. Use that and prove them wrong!
