“Winter Lights:” Rags & Riches Stroll Down Memory Lane

“The older we get, we often forget some of our greatest memories,” Tanner Whitt, vocalist of Rags & Riches, says. “Then, holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries roll around and the magic of our yesterdays come back and fill us full with emotions.” During a time when it’s more important than ever to focus on the good, Tanner and Peyton have been hard at work on their new single, “Winter Lights” that explores these very types of positive memories.

Formed in 2017, Lexington-based Rags & Riches has released countless hit tracks, including “Speed of Sound,” their debut single that collected over 650,000 streams on Spotify and over 500,000 views on YouTube less than three months after its February 2019 release. Since, the band has released other hit tracks like “Don’t Look Down” and “Blood Runs Cold, as well as “Tension of the Season,” inspired by their grandfather’s recovery from a near-fatal stroke amidst the already troubling Covid-19 pandemic.

Finding Inspiration in the Small Moments

Much like “Tension of the Season,” the brothers’ latest release, “Winter Lights,” is a deeply personal track that is simultaneously accessible to a wide variety of listeners.

For Tanner and Peyton, the lyrics of “this song take us back to some of our personal favorite moments.” Between more specific experiences–“Mamma said you can be anything, son live your dreams / I was Skywalker, I was ruling the world at only 8 years old”–and a more general, incredibly catchy chorus that combines the magic of childhood with a wintery theme–“Under the winter lights / the memories fill my mind / like magic brought to life / magic brought to life / sometimes a simple melody becomes your greatest remedy / It’s bittersweet remembering the kid I used to be.”

A Warm Mug of Musicality

Much like its lyrics, the instrumentals of “Winter Lights” are warm and comforting, a childhood mug of hot chocolate after a day of playing in the snow. The mellow background instrumentals are well-produced and thought out, much like Rags & Riches’ other tracks. Reflective of the lyrical content, the aesthetic builds, ebbing and flowing with the rhythm of the vocal line. The gentle, rising melodies combine the best of songs like “Speed of Sound” and “Tension of the Season,” creating a unique, but still very on-brand, sound.

“Winter Lights” is the perfect track to usher in a new year of Rags & Riches while still paying homage to their past releases and continually-developing aesthetic.
