“And I’ll exist but nothing more / Cause I’ve been looking at life through a pair of eyes with a dismal point of view / I’ve searched for any sign as to why life feels so dull / But I don’t have a clue….”

Today’s Advent Calendar feature is Safe Bet! The solo project of Gino Savarino started in 2015, Safe Bet recorded their debut EP, How’s Life Without Me after playing only a few shows. In 2017, Safe Bet recorded and released a second EP, What’s Left of This, and began travelling out of state for shows. By 2018, Safe Bet was on the road with artists like Bogues and Kayak Jones and released an EP focused on mental health titled Erased // Idle Head. After touring minimally in 2019 to focus on other aspects of life, Safe Bet returned to the studio in late 2019 and early 2020 to record the songs that became their latest EP Joy, Find Me.

The five-track record is “a journey, exploring exploring all the darkness and light on a spectrum of existential ultimatums from despair to hope, regression to progress, self-awareness to uncertainty. There is relief in the coexisting of all these emotions.”

On the journey of the creation of the EP, Gino reveals that, “Joy, Find Me” is a collection of songs that were written over the course of two years while not knowing what direction to take this project. I had been wanting to make the transition to a full band for so long, but was in the process of writing these songs and felt that they didn’t sound right translated to full band. They’re vulnerable, and I hope the way we decided to record them encompasses that. These songs are about my constant struggle to stay on top of my mental health, my feelings of inadequacy/discontentment toward my own art, my decision to make excuses for anything and everything rather than being upfront about why I am the way I am, and my inability to view the glass as being half-full….Though I, and many others, may feel like it, nobody is alone in having these thoughts/feelings, and I truly hope these songs can serve as a reminder to that.”
